The Parliament Committee on Government Oversight has confirmed that it has received documentation proving Minister of Higher Education Dr Maryam Mariya and Minister of Housing Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed have both renounced their dual citizenship.

The Government Oversight Committee earlier scrutinised the new government for appointing ministers who had been living abroad for extended periods, raising concerns about potential dual citizenship.

The Constitution explicitly states in Article 130(a) that cabinet ministers must hold sole citizenship of the Maldives. An inquiry was initiated after suspicions arose that some ministers might possess foreign passports. The chair of the committee confirmed to local media that both Mariya and Haidar have submitted documentation proving their renunciation of dual citizenship. Mariya renounced her citizenship of New Zealand, while Haidar renounced his citizenship of the United Kingdom.
