The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has ramped up policing in Malé city, coinciding with the school holidays when a large number of residents are away from their homes.
Police said the presence of police officers on the streets of the city will be increased in the special operation, with particular attention given to roads during peak hours, crowded areas, and even during times typically considered safe.
Officers will monitor the roads with Vehicle Check Points (VCPs) in various parts of Malé, conducting stop-and-search operations, checking the condition of road vehicles, and identifying vehicles causing disruption to public transport, according to the police. The roads are expected to be particularly congested during times people coming and going from the atolls.
The operation also involves inspecting boats and other docked seafaring vessels, advising against unlawful practices in transporting goods and people, and disseminating information on safe practices.
As part of the operation, authorities are running a campaign to raise public awareness on crimes. Officers will meet with the public to listen to their concerns, provide advice to residents on measures they can take to protect themselves from criminal activity, and offer guidance on important factors to be mindful of when leaving for vacation.
In addition, information will be provided to the public on how to be aware of, and help prevent, fraud and money laundering and on precautions to be taken when exchanging foreign currency. There are also measures to protect the public from the increasing number of cyber, and related, crimes, according to the police.
The police operation is scheduled to continue until the end of the current school holidays.
