President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday ratified the Fourth Amendment Bill to the Presidential Elections Act and the Third Amendment Bill to the Elections (General) Act. Both amendment bills were passed by the Parliament on 19 June 2023.
The amendment to the Presidential Elections Act, which changes Section 5(d) of the existing law, extends the filing window for presidential candidatures from 10 to 14 days.
The Third Amendment Bill to the Elections (General) Act revises Section 45(b) and introduces a new section to enable visually impaired voters to mark their ballots independently. The specific provisions of the amendment outline the necessary guidelines and mechanisms for visually impaired voters to mark their ballots without reliance on external assistance.
