The Maldives men’s and women’s three-on-three basketball teams have won bronze medals at the Indian Ocean Island Games in Madagascar.
The women’s team secured a narrow 19-15 victory against Mayotte in the third-place playoff game on Monday.
The team, which suffered an 18-6 defeat against Réunion in the semifinals, earned a direct semifinal berth after having dominated both of their group stage encounters. The first match saw them triumph over Seychelles with a convincing score of 14-7. They defeated Mayotte in the second game with a score of 13-10.
In the battle for the bronze medal, the men’s team went head-to-head with Mauritius in a gripping showdown. They delivered a remarkable performance, managing to secure a hard-fought victory in the fiercely competitive match with a score of 14-13.
The men’s team advanced to the semifinals of the tournament where the eventually succumbed to a 16-21 defeat at the hands of Mayotte. They overcame Réunion in the quarterfinals with a narrow margin of 20-18 points.
