HMD Global, the Finnish company renowned for its Nokia smartphones, unveiled the Nokia G42 model on Wednesday, 28 June, introducing an innovative concept that promotes user repairability. The device, equipped with 5G connectivity and an array of impressive features, aims to entice customers with its affordable price tag and the ability to repair it using parts provided by iFixit, the popular repair advocacy organisation.
Priced at USD 252 for the 128GB version, the Nokia G42 comes in an elegant purple hue that appeals to a wide range of consumers. While HMD Global has not yet announced details about availability in the US, it is expected to make its way to other markets soon.
The phone builds upon the success of its predecessor, the G22, which was showcased earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona. The Nokia G42 5G boasts a more premium look and feel, complemented by a 50-megapixel main camera and a 6.56-inch screen that delivers a vibrant viewing experience.
One standout feature of the Nokia G42 is its user-repairability, allowing customers to fix their devices themselves. HMD Global has collaborated with iFixit, a prominent repair advocacy organization, to ensure that the necessary parts and guides are readily available for users who choose to undertake their own repairs. This approach not only empowers consumers but also contributes to reducing electronic waste by extending the lifespan of the device.
Alongside the repairability aspect, the Nokia G42 offers impressive specifications that cater to the needs of modern smartphone users. The device boasts a long-lasting battery, providing users with a remarkable three-day battery life, ideal for those constantly on the go. Additionally, HMD Global is committed to providing regular software updates, including three years of monthly security updates and two years of operating system upgrades, ensuring that customers can enjoy a secure and up-to-date experience.
While users have the freedom to repair their phones, they will be required to purchase the respective replacement parts. The charging port, battery, and rear cover are available for purchase at GBP 24.95, GBP 29.95, and GBP 29.95, respectively, enabling users to address specific issues with their devices without incurring substantial costs.
