Hisaan Hussain has been appointed Vice President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The announcement was made during an MDP National Council meeting.
Hussain, a former Thulhaadhoo lawmaker, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She also serves as the party’s legal director.
MDP President Abdulla Shahid nominated Hussain for the vice presidency, noting her capabilities and dedication. Shahid highlighted the need for more women in leadership roles within the party, making Hussain’s appointment even more significant.
During the 19th parliament, Hussain served as the Thulaadhoo lawmaker. She also represented the parliament on the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) for five years.
Hussain’s service to the MDP spans over 17 years in various positions. In 2007, she served as the Law and Justice Shadow Minister in the MDP’s Shadow Cabinet. Later, during MDP’s first administration, she took on the position of Legal Affairs Secretary.
Since 2012, Hussain has been at the forefront of all legal challenges faced by the MDP, serving as the party’s legal director. Her dedication was particularly evident between 2012 and 2018, when she played a crucial role in seeking the release of arbitrarily detained MDP leadership members during President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.
In 2016, Hussain played a significant role in the all-party talks with the then-ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
