Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has travelled to Paris, France, to attend the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics. His visit comes at a critical juncture as the nation grapples with pressing fiscal and economic challenges.

Latheef’s trip coincides with the fiscal reform measures announced by the Mohamed Muizzu administration, aimed at alleviating the country’s economic challenges.

The vice president is participating in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games at the invitation of the French government and the International Olympic Committee, according to a statement by the President’s Office. While the exact cost of Latheef’s visit remains undisclosed, it is believed that the state will incur the expenses.

On Friday, Latheef met with the Maldivian contingent competing in the games. Latheef highlighted the administration’s unwavering commitment to advancing sports nationwide, according to a President’s Office statement.

The Maldives has a record number of five athletes participating in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Among them are table tennis star Fathimath Dheema Ali and sprinter Ibadulla Adam, both of whom are selected to bear the national flag at the opening ceremony.
