President Mohamed Muizzu has established the embassy of the Maldives in Türkiye, the President’s Office has announced. This strategic move aims to bolster bilateral relations and foster political, economic, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.

The cabinet made the decision to establish the Maldivian Embassy in Türkiye on 10 December 2023. The President’s Office has delineated the mandates of the embassy, which will operate under the purview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This decision comes on the heels of extensive discussions between officials from both countries during President Muizzu’s inaugural state visit to Türkiye. A significant outcome of this visit was the formalisation of a trade and economic cooperation agreement between the two nations.

President Muizzu, currently in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), for the World Government Summit 2024, met with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of Türkiye. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the summit, focused on exploring avenues to enhance bilateral cooperation, as per the President’s Office.

The Maldives and Türkiye first established diplomatic relations on 28 May 1979.
