The Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture has begun investigating the unexpected presence of an ostrich in a residential home in Malé.

The ministry’s launched an investigations into this unusual matter when a photograph of the ostrich alongside its owner started circulating on social media platforms. Based on the images, the bird measures approximately 5 feet in height.

Regarding the matter, Executive Director at the Agriculture Ministry, Nasrulla Hussain said; “We have permitted ostriches to be raised on farms. But we have never authorised anyone to raise or keep ostriches within residential homes.”

A document, which surfaced on social media, reveals that the authorities had issued permits in January 2022 for the importation of 50 ostrich eggs from Iran.

Ten ostriches are currently being raised within officially approved farms in the Maldives.
