Musthafa Mohamed has been elected as the new president of the Athletics Association of Maldives. His appointment was confirmed during the Extraordinary Athletics Congress 2024, held at the Meeruma Hotel, Malé, on Friday.

The event was marked by a unique scenario where a single candidate contested each open position. The eligibility of the candidates was determined through a yes or no vote, resulting in the unanimous election of all contestants by the 15 members in attendance.

The next term of the Athletics Association, from 2024 to 2028, will be under the leadership of Mohamed, who brings a wealth of experience to the role. Having served on the association’s steering committee for two terms and held a senior position at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mohamed is well-versed in athletics administration.

Notably, Mohamed represented the Athletics Association at the recent Annual General Meeting of the Maldives Olympics Committee and played an important role in supporting Maldivian athletes in international competitions, including the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) in Madagascar last year.

The election filled the top position at the Athletic Association, which had remained vacant since the end of Ahmed Tholal’s 12-year tenure at the helm. Following his appointment as the Commissioner of Sports, Tholal resigned as president of the Athletics Association. Subsequently, the reins of the association were temporarily held by the acting president, Ahmed Azeel, who was reappointed as Vice President at the recent election.

Joining the leadership team are Hasnau Rasheed Hussain, elected as treasurer, along with Hussain Ameen, Mohamed Shahid, and Mohamed Shujau, elected as general members. Notably, former runner Yaznee Nasheeda has been elected as a member representing female athletes.
