Police have urged the public to be cognisant of scams run in the guise of the government’s ‘Gedhoruveriyaa’ housing scheme.
While there has been a sharp rise in various scams with the intent to defraud, police are advising the public to remain vigilant as such attempts may increase in the wake of the publication of the list of those who have been awarded flats.
According to the Maldives Police Service (MPS), there has been a steady stream of complaints of phone, text message and email scams aimed at defrauding people. When the government published the list of those who were awarded plots in June of this year, there was an uptick of scams, often disguised as government authorities and other agencies, targetting individuals on the list.
Understanding the existence of such scams, how they operate, and being aware of the methods and programmes utilised by scammers are important steps in thwarting their efforts, the agency said.
