During his official visit to Serbia, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid engaged in significant endeavours to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. The Minister’s visit took place from May 8 to May 10, 2023.
One of the key highlights of the visit was the signing of several agreements aimed at enhancing collaboration across various fields, including trade, sports, and people-to-people engagement. These agreements demonstrate the commitment of both countries to bolster their existing relationship, foster synergy, and work together for reciprocal growth. Minister Shahid expressed confidence that these agreements would establish a solid foundation to deepen the connection between the countries and open up new avenues for economic cooperation.
Additionally, Minister Shahid paid a courtesy call on the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, conveying greetings and well wishes from the President of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. During the visit, he emphasised the Maldives government’s eagerness to collaborate closely with Serbia in areas such as tourism, trade, and sports, referring to the key agreements signed on May 9.
Furthermore, Minister Shahid held an official meeting with his Serbian counterpart, Ivica Dačić, who serves as the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia. Accompanying Minister Shahid during his visit were Uz. Ali Zahir, Chief of Staff at the President’s Office, Dr. Hala Hameed, Secretary Bilateral, and Ms. Fathmath Lamya Imthiyaz, Assistant Director.
After concluding his trip to Serbia, Minister Shahid departed for Hungary on a similar visit. There, he will meet with the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, to explore ways of further refining the already robust relations between the Maldives and Hungary. The discussion will also address issues of mutual concern. Additionally, Minister Shahid plans to meet with the Vice President of the Hungarian Parliament, Csaba Hende, and other senior government officials to identify additional avenues for cooperation between the Maldives and Hungary.
